Why Shia Iftar in Faisalabad Comes After Sunset
In Fiqh Jafria, the fast does not end the moment the sun’s disc goes below the horizon. Maghrib, and with it iftar, begins when the redness that appears in the eastern sky after sunset (humrah mashriqiyyah) has risen and passed overhead. This marks that the sun has truly set, not just dipped out of sight behind buildings or haze.
That redness takes several minutes to clear, so Shia iftar always falls after the Sunni iftar time. Pakistani Ramadan calendars, including this one, express the gap as a fixed 10 minutes after the Hanafi time. Some imambargah timetables use a slightly longer gap on certain days of the year. If your imambargah prints its own calendar, follow it; if you are unsure on a given evening, wait until the eastern sky has darkened.
Why Jafria Sehri Ends Earlier
Shia calendars set a precaution before true dawn, known as imsak. Eating and drinking stop at imsak so that no part of the fast’s first moment is missed. On this page, Jafria sehri ends 10 minutes before the Hanafi sehri time, which already includes a one-minute margin of its own.
The niyyat for the fast is made in the heart. It can be made at any time during the night, and for Ramadan many scholars allow one intention at the start of the month for all of its fasts. Eating sehri is mustahab even if it is only a few dates and a glass of water.
How These Shia Timings Are Calculated
Each time is worked out from the sun’s position over Faisalabad city (31.4167° N, 73.0833° E) in Pakistan Standard Time. The steps are:
- Find true dawn, when the sun is 18° below the horizon (the Karachi method), and sunset, when its upper edge disappears after correcting for refraction.
- Add a one-minute safety margin: dawn one minute earlier, sunset one minute later. This gives the Hanafi times.
- Apply the Jafria adjustment: sehri 10 minutes before the Hanafi time and iftar 10 minutes after it.
The page recalculates the times every day at midnight Pakistan time. The same times work across Faisalabad district, including Jaranwala, Samundri, Tandlianwala and Chak Jhumra, where the difference from the city stays within a minute or two.
Important Ramadan Nights for the Shia Community in Faisalabad
The nights of the 19th, 21st and 23rd of Ramadan are kept as the nights of Qadr, with majalis, nawafil and the recital of Dua-e-Jawshan Kabir in imambargahs across Faisalabad. The 21st is Youm-e-Ali, the day of Imam Ali’s shahadat. Dates below are counted from this calendar’s first roza; an Islamic night starts at Maghrib on the evening before the date.
| Occasion | Islamic date | On this calendar |
|---|---|---|
| Wiladat (birth) of Imam Hasan (a.s.) | 15 Ramadan | Thursday, 5 March 2026 |
| Imam Ali (a.s.) wounded in the Kufa mosque; first night of Qadr | Night of 19 Ramadan | After Maghrib on Sunday, 8 March 2026 |
| Second night of Qadr | Night of 21 Ramadan | After Maghrib on Tuesday, 10 March 2026 |
| Shahadat of Imam Ali (a.s.), Youm-e-Ali | 21 Ramadan | Wednesday, 11 March 2026 |
| Third night of Qadr | Night of 23 Ramadan | After Maghrib on Thursday, 12 March 2026 |
Iftar Dua in Fiqh Jafria
This dua is found in Shia dua collections and is read in most Shia homes in Pakistan just before opening the fast:
اَللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلٰى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ وَعَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْتُ
Allahumma laka sumtu, wa ‘ala rizqika aftartu, wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu. “O Allah, for You I fasted, with Your provision I break my fast, and in You I place my trust.”
Moon Sighting and Eid ul-Fitr
Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin in Pakistan on Monday, 8 February 2027. The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee looks for the crescent after sunset on 29 Sha’ban, the evening of Sunday, 7 February 2027. If the moon is seen, the first sehri is the next morning; if not, Sha’ban completes 30 days and Ramadan starts a day later. Eid ul-Fitr is then expected on 9 March 2027 or 10 March 2027, after 29 or 30 fasts.
Some Shia families follow the moon-sighting announcement of their marja’s office, which can differ from the national one by a day. The daily times stay the same; only the start and end of the month move.
