When Zuhr Starts and Ends

Zuhr begins as soon as the sun passes its highest point in the sky and starts to decline. In Faisalabad today that is 11:55 AM. By Fiqh Hanafi, Zuhr lasts until an object’s shadow is twice its own length, which today is 4:02 PM, a window of 4 hours 7 minutes. Those who follow the one-shadow rule end Zuhr earlier, at 3:13 PM today.

The Prophet ﷺ said, “The time of Zuhr is when the sun has passed the meridian, as long as the time of Asr has not come” (Sahih Muslim 612). Zuhr has the longest window of the five prayers in Faisalabad: about 3 hours 25 minutes in late December and close to 5 hours in June.

Unlike the other prayers, Zuhr time barely moves through the year. It is earliest around 28 October at 11:51 AM and latest around 4 February at 12:22 PM. That half-hour shift comes from the earth’s tilted, oval orbit, not from the length of the day.

Zawal: Do Not Start a Prayer at Midday

Zawal is the moment the sun stands at its highest point. Praying exactly then is forbidden: the Prophet ﷺ named it as one of three times when prayer should not be offered, “when the sun is at its height at midday until it passes the meridian” (Sahih Muslim 831). For Faisalabad, avoid beginning any prayer, fard or nafl, in the few minutes just before 11:55 AM today. Once Zuhr time has started, the restriction is over.

Jumma Time in Faisalabad

On Friday, Jumma takes the place of Zuhr and is prayed within the same time. The next Jumma is on Friday, 16 October 2026, when Zuhr time begins at 11:53 AM. No khutbah or Jumma prayer can begin before that. Each masjid then sets its own khutbah time inside the Zuhr window and announces it on its board.

The Quran says: “O you who believe, when the call is made for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade” (Surah al-Jumu‘ah 62:9).

Zuhr in Faisalabad’s Summer Heat

From May to August, afternoon temperatures in Faisalabad often pass 40°C. The Prophet ﷺ said, “When the heat is intense, pray Zuhr when it becomes cooler” (Sahih al-Bukhari 533). For this reason the Hanafi school prefers delaying Zuhr in summer and praying it early in winter. Many masjids in Pakistan move their Zuhr jamaat later in summer for this reason; the jamaat must still finish before Asr begins.

How Many Rakats Are in Zuhr?

Zuhr has twelve rakats in the Hanafi practice followed in Pakistan: four sunnah mu’akkadah, four fard, two sunnah mu’akkadah, and two nafl. The sunnah before and after Zuhr are part of the twelve daily sunnah rakats the Prophet ﷺ encouraged (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 415). If Zuhr ends before you can pray, see when Asr time in Faisalabad begins today.
