Hanafi and Shafi’i Asr: Why There Are Two Times
Asr is the only prayer where the schools of fiqh give different start times. In the Hanafi school, Asr begins when an object’s shadow is twice its own length, plus the shadow it had at midday. The Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali schools start Asr when the shadow equals the object’s length. Ahl-e-Hadith masjids follow the one-shadow time.
In Faisalabad today the one-shadow Asr begins at 3:13 PM and the Hanafi Asr at 4:02 PM, 49 minutes later. Most masjids in Faisalabad are Hanafi, so the azan you hear usually follows the later time. If your masjid gives its Asr azan much earlier, it follows the one-shadow rule.
Check any timetable you use: the earlier of the two times is always the one-shadow Asr, never the Hanafi one. Some Faisalabad timetables online label them the wrong way round. During Ramadan, our Hanafi sehri, iftar and Isha timetable shows both Asr times next to each other.
When Asr Ends and the Disliked Time Before Sunset
Asr lasts until sunset, at 5:42 PM today. The last part of that window is disliked. The Prophet ﷺ warned against delaying Asr until the sun turns yellow, calling it the prayer of a hypocrite who waits until the sun is about to set and then rushes four rakats (Sahih Muslim 622). In Faisalabad, aim to finish Asr before about 5:22 PM today, roughly 20 minutes before sunset, when the sun turns pale.
If you are running late, still pray before sunset. In the Hanafi school, that day’s Asr remains valid even in the disliked time; it is only nafl prayers that should not be started then. After the Asr fard, do not pray nafl until Maghrib, following the hadith “there is no prayer after Asr until the sun sets” (Sahih al-Bukhari 586).
Asr Is the Middle Prayer
The Quran says: “Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:238). The Prophet ﷺ identified the middle prayer as Asr (Sahih Muslim 627). He also said, “Whoever misses the Asr prayer, it is as if he has lost his family and his wealth” (Sahih al-Bukhari 552). Asr falls when work, school runs and market trips fill the afternoon, which is why it is so easy to let slip.
How Asr Time Moves Through the Year
Hanafi Asr in Faisalabad is earliest around 29 November at 3:27 PM and latest around 7 July at 5:08 PM. In winter, Asr begins well before most offices close, so office workers often pray at their workplace. The Asr window is also short in winter, about 1 hour 37 minutes in early January, against 2 hours 10 minutes in June.
How Many Rakats Are in Asr?
Asr has eight rakats: four sunnah ghair mu’akkadah, then four fard. The four sunnah are optional but rewarded. When Asr ends, Maghrib time in Faisalabad begins straight away at sunset.
